The key to a successful, longstanding workout plan is to get involved in something that you like or interests you. The right activity will give you that "good high" and can often leave you with more energy than you know what to do with after your session. For me, it is traditional boxing.....
3 years and over a 100lbs ago I would have never even dreamed of picking up a pair of boxing gloves (girls don't do that!) or waiting every Saturday night to see what match up is being televised. Now it's unusual if Mr. UPS isn't making a weekly visit to the house with boxes from Everlast, Title or Ringside! Sure signs that you are officially hooked...
With boxing it is all about you. You are the only one responsible for your performance. The bout is either worn or lost by you. Your fate is not in the hands of others. There is also a unique feeling that comes from being able to pound the living daylights out of something and not have to worry about getting a bad reputation, fired or arrested. Stress relief at it's best.
I would encourage anyone out there even remotely interested in combat sports to find a local boxing gym and give it a try. While my heart is with traditional I can appreciate some of the mixed martial arts. But do yourself a favor, learn the basics first before you start picking your feet up off the ground to kick or going to the ground game. Boxing is a very physical and mental game and is a good foundation for any of the other high contact sports.
So as I sit here thinking I have to stretch from this morning's boxing class and feeling a tad bit guilty for that small piece of pie I had at dinner I have something to look forward to.... Boxing for the next 3 days! Maybe I'll even get in the ring for a little sparring, there's nothing like taking a few body and head shots from a former title holding pro boxer! ;D
