As with any other gym, the 1st of the year is bringing an increased number of members to local boxing gyms. Most gyms will offer a free trial class to anyone who is interested and a lot of new memberships do result when individuals find out just how difficult a boxing class can be and how much of a full body workout it is.
So for the newbie, the first question is going to be, "Where do I get gloves and wraps?" If you're hooked on boxing, unfortunately you are into a sport that is going to require some creativity when getting your gear. While you can run out to a thingy's or Modell's to get that off the shelf pair of gloves, the popularity of the sport does not yet dictate the need for these local stores to carry quality choices. If you want something that will last for a while your best alternative is to obtain your gear on-line. Better quality and typically cheaper, especially if you can catch a sale. So here are some of your on-line choices for gear:
Title Boxing - This is one of the more popular retailers. They carry multiple brands and always seem to be under the suggested retail price on gear. They carry their own line which you will see is a popular choice at the gyms. Good quality for the money.
Ringside Boxing - This is another retailer that carries their own brand as well as others. They carry Cleto Reyes which is still hand made in Mexico. A little higher tag but worth the money.
Everlast - Perhaps the most well recognized name in Boxing, Everlast does have their own website. They will occasionally run sales but you will find that you can find the Everlast brand at any of the other retailers mentioned in this article.
Boxing Depot - This is a relatively new site for me. I just recently placed an order for Cleto Reyes sparring gloves, finding they not only had them for $30 below suggested retail but they also offer the best pricing on shipping. While they do not offer their own brand, they do carry all the others that the other sites offer.
Having placed orders with Title, Ringside and Everlast I can attest to the fact that even during heavy holiday shipping, most items are received in 5 to 6 business days. If you order this week you will definitely have it the next week. And believe me, it is worth the wait for what you will receive by way of quality.
Since you are ordering on-line you can't really try before you buy. While each site does have a return policy you will still loose out on shipping costs. Your best bet would be to ask around at your local gym and do your own research on-line. There is already a thread on this site dedicated to gloves. Keep watching in the future as we will be discussing other equipment as we progress through the sport....
