I was working out at a commercial gym near my house tonight and I saw one of their trainers doing a rotational exercise that I can only describe as a more dynamic version of a Scorpion Stretch that Mike Boyle demonstrates in figure 5 below: Although it was getting quite a bit of attention from those near by, it looked painful and possibly dangerous. I was reminded of one of Mike Boyle's lectures on spinal rotation that I had recently attended in which he talked about how increasing spinal mobility beyond its normal range of motion is not only detrimental to performance but can ultimately lead to injuries. I did some searching and found a couple of Mike's articles on this topic here they are: www.sportsrehabexpert.com/public/97.cfm?sd=2mboyle1959.wordpress.com/2008/11/30/what-the-heck-is-a-thoracic-spine/The first discusses some of the common stretches that were once considered to be good for the back and are now looked at as possibly detrimental. The second has some good alternative ways to stretch and strengthen the spine.
