You know what really grinds my gears???
The improper use of a squat rack. My fitness friends, 8 out of every 10 squat racks are misused everyday so people can do BICEP CURLS. Now I know I don't have factual information to back up this statistic, however I and many have seen this crime take place multiple times. College girls trying to get their thighs and buns right for spring break, fitness fanatics trying to get ready for fitness competitions, and overall people with fitness/health new years resolutions are all being DEPRIVED of doing squats DAILY. This is unfair....Especially to the people that made strong new years resolutions to come to the gym and make some personal progress. We know how hard it is to get them to join in on the fun. Let's not give them an excuse to not come workout anymore (Excuse: There is always a line at the squat rack. I have to wait behind people doing bicep curls. I don't think this fitness resolution is worth the time.) Professional Bicep Curlers, here are my resolutions....
1) Free weights make excellent tools to strengthen biceps. There are various exercises you can do standing up or on a bench.
2) Free Motion bicep curls give you similar benefits as free weight bicep curls.
3) Curl bar. Yes gyms do have them. Easy to use and a better kung fu grip.
4) If you're not sure what to do with resolutions 1-3, it never hurts to use a Cybex machine.
Hope this helps out.

I love it. The same thing happens to me all the time. I'm going to use the squat rack to squat and there's someone in it doing bicep curls with just the bar. Of course there's usually only one (non smith) squat rack in a gym, but there are 5 open bench press racks with the same bar that can easily be used for those "hardcore" bicep curls. Plus there's two racks of barbells ranging from 10-100lbs that would work just as well.

Good morning Fitness Brothas and Sistas....
Do you know what really grinds my gears???
People who go to the gym, HOG the equipment, and REFUSE to share. Let''s be realistic. A good portion of the people in the gym take 3-5 minute breaks in between sets. This not-so brief period of time is used to listen to a favorite song on the ipod, read a WHOLE Motor Trend/Cosmopolitan article, or stare down a female doing leg curls (laying down, BUTT UP). People we need you to share. We understand that these distractions provide you brief entertainment, however some people have goals and objectives to conquer. Here are my resolutions...
1) Share equipment with others. You might learning something through the execution of collaboration.
2) Share equipment with the opposite sex. There is a possibility that he/she might be your future husband/wife or at the minimum you will get floor seats to seeing eye candy.

Good afternoon USF (United States of Fitness)! First of all, BIG UPs to people around the world that are still heavily committed to their fitness/health new years resolutions. Stay in there people you have made it through half the month! Now to the news....
Do you know what really grinds my gears???
The lack of comprehension of cardio. Cardio is an excellent way to strengthen the heart and burn fat/calories, HOWEVER over doing it will lead to some loss of muscle mass. People diversity is a beautiful thing. Practice it in the gym and try free weights, machines, body weight exercises, etc. DIVERSITY is so beautiful it will gift you a body to match. Here are my recommended resolutions...
1) Contact Brian for new ideas on how to burn fat, tone muscle, and increase strength.
2) Step off the treadmill after 2 miles of jogging and become familiar with the weight equipment in the gym.
3) It never hurts to join a fitness class. Knowledge is POWER!

Back by popular demand!!
Do you know what really grinds my gears??
Lets go back to the first posting regarding proper use of the squat rack. After I said bicep curls was no no, now upright rowing is the new thing! People what is your obsession with the squat rack? Why do you worship it so much?? Did I misread the bible? Which passage had the squat rack in it? Here are the resolutions for myself.
1) Go back and open the bible, find the squat rack passage, and read it for the first time.
2) Go to church and ask the priest to provide some insight regarding the squat rack.
3) Go to itunes and download religious songs about the squat rack and listen to them while I do squats.
Here are YOUR resolutions.
1) Use a curl bar.
2) Use the smith machine.

I like to use cable machines when I do upright rows. I find that it's easier to adjust the angle and thus the muscle area that you want to work.

My first trip to the gym yesterday reminded me of this post. I saw a guy using the squat machine for upright rows.
