Anyone have any thoughts or experiences with yoga? With the recent pulled muscle in my back I've been thinking about how I tend to neglect stretching, particularly in my upper body. I've been giving some serious thought to trying a simple at home yoga dvd so I can have a more guided stretching routine. So far I've read more good than bad things about the benefits of yoga but I'm always open to other opinions. I'm not looking to stand on my head or anything. I just want a more focused way to stretch my whole body out without neglecting certain areas. I know I can just do stretches but I tend to need things that are more structured or I lose focus very easily.

I also have flexibility problem and I try to get to yoga class once a week, which usually ends up being once every couple of weeks. But if I had more time I would go every day. I've never followed a video, but as long as they explain the positions well I don't see it being a problem. I would recomend going to a class a couple of times to get the feel for what you are doing, and then maintain it with books and videos. I go to West Hartford Yoga studio on the Newington/West Hartford line. They have some good instructors.

The dvd I was looking at is for beginners and has a 40 minute long instruction on doing the poses right and common mistakes. The instruction's actually longer than the actual work outs I think. Do you feel like even doing the class once a week or every few weeks has helped you to be less stiff? I researched through a fair amount of dvds and a lot of people say that doing them has helped alleviate a lot of back pain and all around stiffness and inflexibility.

I definetly noticed a diference when I was able to keep up with regular yoga classes and stretching. The problem is that like most people I fall into the trap of something working so good that I stop doing it. Then I let it go until it gets bad again, like it is now, and I end up having to start over again. If you can make it flexibility part of your normal behavior patterns you will be much better off for it.

Your questions don’t look easy to reply, anyway the best I can inform you that is Yoga itself still and tones the body, but it isn’t a cardiovascular exercise, you must do at least a 40 minute a day quick walk or some type to increase the efficiency of yoga as a weight loss tool.

I've never done a class, but I've done the P90x yoga workout a few times, at least to the extent that I can - I can't fully do some of the positions. Even without doing it on any kind of regular basis, I notice a huge difference in flexibility the next day. I imagine it would be even better if I actually stuck to it a couple times a week.
